Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant: Funding to Build Your Workforce

Investing in your team can strengthen productivity, competitiveness, and long-term growth. The Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant (CAPG) is designed to help eligible Alberta employers offset some of the cost of employee training.

For businesses planning to build technical, digital, or productivity-related skills, the program may provide an opportunity to invest in professional development while reducing the overall cost.

How much funding is available?

Eligible employers may receive funding toward approved training costs:

  • Existing employees: Up to 50% of eligible training costs, to a maximum of $5,000 per employee each year.
  • Unemployed Albertans: Up to 75% of eligible training costs when hiring and training an unemployed Albertan, to a maximum of $10,000 per individual each year.
  • Employer maximum: Up to $100,000 in funding per employer each year.

Funding can help cover eligible training expenses such as tuition, textbooks, exam fees, software, and certain travel costs.

What training is eligible?

Eligible training is generally focused on developing skills that can improve workplace productivity and competitiveness.

Training may include technical, digital, and other productivity-related skills. Programs must meet the grant’s eligibility requirements, including requirements around where and how the training is delivered and completed.

How could the grant help your business?

For eligible employers, the value goes beyond reducing training costs. The program can support broader workforce and business goals, including:

  • Developing skills: Build capabilities that support changing technology and business needs.
  • Attracting and retaining talent: Professional development can be an important part of your employee offering.
  • Expanding your workforce: Funding may help offset the cost of hiring and training eligible unemployed Albertans.
  • Supporting growth: Better skills can help businesses adapt, improve productivity, and prepare for what’s next.

Before you apply

Consider the skills your business will need over the next year and identify training that supports those priorities. Confirm that your business, employees, and proposed training meet the program’s current eligibility requirements before committing to costs.

Applications are submitted through the program’s online portal. Because program requirements and available funding can change, review the current Government of Alberta guidance before applying.
